Middlefield is a large primary school, with 320 pupils. We're in a lovely modern building, situated very close to the Parklands campus.

Children start to come to Middlefield at a very early age. Now that we have our creche (opened last year, in partnership with Sure Start) we can welcome babies and toddlers who can be well looked after while their mums (and some dads!) enjoy the courses at the adult learning centre. The creche has close links with our nursery and reception classes. When the time comes for children to start full-time school, they'll already have had a very good introduction to what it's all about!

We're very proud of our children's achievements in 2004. When the league tables for primary schools were published, our school was one of the most improved in the city, with a huge 60 points increase on last year's aggregate score.

Our unit class for children with behavioural difficulties continues to operate successfully. The unit supports the return into mainstream schooling for children who may have experienced exclusion and other problems.

This year we've extended our after-school activities and our children now enjoy a wide range of after-school clubs. We're continuing to run our very successful breakfast club, which is open from 8 o'clock every morning.

Middlefield is playing an important part in the regeneration of Speke. It's a community school with a wide range of extended activities:

• Our adult learning centre
• Our creche for the very youngest members of the community
• The Quiet Place helping to deal with stress
• Children's University, providing extra-curricular learning opportunities
• Work experience programme for child-care students from Parklands
• Partnership links with the other Speke schools and with local employers

Middlefield parents and staff want the best for our children. We're seeing how standards of achievement and attainment are rising, year on year, in our school. And we're determined to keep that momentum going, with great teaching and learning, families and school working together and a school that's a great place to be in.
